CASMII Fact Sheet on US-Iran Standoff

(source: CASMII) August 16, 2010

The current U.S. standoff against Iran, like the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, was instigated by the neoconservatives of the Bush Administration based on their doctrine of “maintaining U.S. pre-eminence, thwarting rival powers and shaping the global security system according to U.S. interests”. In the case of Saddam’s regime, its fictitious Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and its alleged links to Al-Qaida were used in the U.S. propaganda war to first impose U.N. sanctions and eventually invade Iraq. We now have a déjà vu situation in which the U.S. and its allies, prodded by Israel, demonize Iran as a threat to world security and accuse it of having a program to develop nuclear weapons. As with Iraq, the real aim is a regime change in Iran to set up a U.S. puppet government in this oil- and gas-rich country in the key strategic Persian Gulf region. This has also happened before in the 1953 U.S.-British coup in Iran. The same forces in U.S., U.K., Israel and allies today distort the truth and engage in deceit, coercion and aggression to achieve their goals. We will briefly examine some of the key facts in the standoff. ››read more

Turning Back From the Point of No Return

by Jeremy Hammond (source: Foreign Policy Journal) August 26, 2010

The drums for war on Iran have been banging louder than ever lately, with a spate of articles by political commentators either directly encouraging the bombing of the Islamic Republic or otherwise offering a narrative in which this is effectively portrayed as the only option to prevent Iran from waging a nuclear holocaust against Israel. ››read more

Fidel Castro: An incident could set in motion an all-out nuclear war against Iran

by Fidel Castro Ruz (source: Cuba Debate) July 12, 2010

From my viewpoint, the United States and its NATO allies have said their last word. Two powerful states with authority and prestige failed to exercise their right of vetoing the perfidious UN Resolution. It was the only possibility to gain time in order to find a formula to save peace, an objective that would have given them more authority to continue struggling for it. Today, everything hangs by a thread. ››read more

ElBaradei totally disagrees with the West that Iran is playing for time and not seeking negotiations

ElbaradeiElbaradeiElBaradei: "Iran is prepared to talk. I know Barack Obama is prepared to talk. And I base that on my discussion few months ago with both Ahmadinejad and Barack Obama. They are both ... of course nobody wants to give everything before negotiations but both of them are committed to negotiation. And I think that condition now with this agreement is absolutely ripe to engage in a full-fledge negotiation. How Iran's nuclear issue will be resolved? Well that has to go to the negotiating table." ››read more

Iran and the NPT Review Conference

by Cyrus Safdari (source: Iran Affairs) April 29, 2010

This year's Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference - as with previous years' - promises to be yet another battle between the developing and the nuclear-armed nations. The US insists that the Non-Proliferation Treaty needs to be rewritten so as to place greater limits on what it calls "nuclear weapons proliferation" whilst the developing nations say that the concern over proliferation is being used as a pretext by the US to avoid its own obligations under the same treaty to disarm its own nukes and to share nuclear technology with everyone else. ››read more

Threatening Iran Is Wrong

Joint Statement by

The antiwar movement everywhere should be extremely alarmed about the Obama Administration’s declaration in April that Washington can target Iran with nuclear weapons. Although vague “all options are on the table” warnings were also issued under George W. Bush, now the threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Iran is enshrined in the revised Nuclear Posture Review of the United States.

Judging the Mood at the IAEA

by Ivanka Barzashka and Ivan Oelrich (source: fas.org) March 22, 2010

The latest IAEA report on Iran has been widely touted as containing new evidence of Iranian weapons work and as a sign of the Agency’s new hard-line attitude toward the Islamic Republic under its new Director General Yukiya Amano. Germany's Unilateral Sanction against Itself and the Unspoken Moral of the Story

by Shirin Shafaie (source: Monthly Review Webzine) February 8, 2010

Netanyahu & MerkelNetanyahu & MerkelGermany can continue sanctioning itself through Iran, the US can pretend to be concerned about the security of the world and democracy in Iran, France can share a desire to destroy Iran's economy and independence, the UK is free to try to sabotage another nationalized Iranian project, and they all can enjoy a ride on the Israeli bandwagon.
