Two seemingly contradictory trends have been dominant with respect to Iran’s nuclear question. First, for decades Iran has been accused of not just developing nuclear weapons but being a short time away from actually using them . Second, non-political nuclear experts, including those at the United Nations, American and Israeli intelligence agencies have consistently disproven these accusations . The western media hardly discusses the latter point, and the irresponsible hype around the former creates the impression of constant imminent danger that needs to be addressed by force . ››read more
The latest statements by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in response to comments made by President Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, in speeches made on the Quds Day ceremony on Friday 16 August, against the Israeli government, are yet another egregious example of double standards towards Iran. ››read more
The US and EU oil embargo against Iran formally take effect this week. To prevent another illegal and criminal war through sanctions leading to a catastrophic war, it is crucial to mobilise public opinion today to challenge Western politicians, demanding the removal of the military option and the illegal sanctions on Iran. The international community must unite to call for a peaceful resolution to the manufactured nuclear stand-off with Iran by negotiations in good faith based on the recognition of Iran’s sovereign and inalienable rights as a member of the Non Proliferation Treaty, for a civilian nuclear technology. ››read more
Now, more than ever, public pressure must be brought to bear against the crippling sanctions and relentless military threats against Iran. It is only greater public awareness that can prevent the senseless drive towards war. In particular we call for greatest mobilization in the rallies in the US and UK on May 19th and 20th against the NATO Summit in Chicago. ››read more
On Saturday 14th April, The Islamic Republic of Iran and the P5+1 (Permanent members of the UN Security Council + Germany) met for the first time in more than 14 months in the Turkish city of Istanbul. These talks provided the first opportunity to defuse tensions that had been rapidly rising over the last few months due to the aggressive imposition of unilateral western sanctions on Iran’s central bank and an oil embargo as well as repeated threats of military action, which are all illegal under international law and the UN charter. ››read more
House of Commons' motion to rule out use of force: First crack in western hawkish alliance against Iran(source: CASMII) February 21, 2012
The first major crack in the western alliance against Iran has now surfaced in the UK's House of Commons by a rebellious Conservative back bencher who has for the first time in a western country proposed a motion against the hawkish western Iran policy. The anti-war groups activists and peace activists all around the world will see this as a promising sign to build a strong lobbying and media campaign to successfully oppose the war drive on Iran. ››read more
On Thursday of last week, two senior US officials confirmed to NBC News that the MKO has been collaborating with Israel’s Mossad in carrying out the assassination of Iranian professors and researchers. This development is very significant for the US has not only admitted that the MKO is involved in terrorist activities in Iran, but also acknowledged their collaboration with Israel’s Mossad. ››read more

For the sake of regional security, Washington and its European allies should accept the Tehran Declaration as the basis of negotiations for a nuclear fuel swap. This landmark declaration was brokered by the leaders of Brazil and Turkey in May, 2010. The arrangement, originally approved by the Obama administration itself, allows nuclear fuel rods to be exchanged outside of Iran. Iran would have no reason to enrich uranium to 20 percent purity if the US and allies supported the swap deal. ››read more

The current U.S. standoff against Iran, like the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, was instigated by the neoconservatives of the Bush Administration based on their doctrine of “maintaining U.S. pre-eminence, thwarting rival powers and shaping the global security system according to U.S. interests”. In the case of Saddam’s regime, its fictitious Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and its alleged links to Al-Qaida were used in the U.S. propaganda war to first impose U.N. sanctions and eventually invade Iraq. We now have a déjà vu situation in which the U.S. and its allies, prodded by Israel, demonize Iran as a threat to world security and accuse it of having a program to develop nuclear weapons. As with Iraq, the real aim is a regime change in Iran to set up a U.S. puppet government in this oil- and gas-rich country in the key strategic Persian Gulf region. This has also happened before in the 1953 U.S.-British coup in Iran. The same forces in U.S., U.K., Israel and allies today distort the truth and engage in deceit, coercion and aggression to achieve their goals. We will briefly examine some of the key facts in the standoff. ››read more
The Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran joins hundreds of other peace activists, in expressing concern for the safety and well being of Dr. Kaveh L. Afrasiabi. We deplore any act of violence and injustice against him, particularly since according to his account, these acts carried out by the police were abusive and extra-legal. Dr. Afrasiabi is a political scientist, a distinguished Iran scholar and an advisory board member to CASMII. His long record of resisting war and sanctions, as well as his promotion of international peace and dialogue is exemplary. We wish him a quick and complete recovery so that this episode is not allowed to distract him from his excellent work in defending Iran against sanctions and threats against Iran. ››read more

The antiwar movement everywhere should be extremely alarmed about the Obama Administration’s declaration in April that Washington can target Iran with nuclear weapons. Although vague “all options are on the table” warnings were also issued under George W. Bush, now the threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Iran is enshrined in the revised Nuclear Posture Review of the United States.
Around the world, anti-war activists are preparing for major protests this spring to oppose the continuing U.S.-led occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, a storm of developments is dramatically increasing tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. In response, the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) is issuing this appeal to the anti-war movements in the United States, United Kingdom and other countries to raise the demands of “No war, no sanctions, no internal interference in Iran!” ››read more
Following the release of IAEA's latest report on Iran last week, a number of scaremongering anti-Iran headlines appeared in the Western media. The LA times chose its headline as "Iran has enough fuel for a nuclear bomb". The New York Times went for "Iran Said to Have Nuclear Fuel for One Weapon" and FOX news reported: "Iran Produces Enough Uranium to Build Nuclear Weapon". In the UK, the Daily Telegraph's article titled "Iran has enough uranium 'to build a nuclear bomb'" and the Daily Mail in the UK announced: "Iran 'has the fuel to build nuclear bomb'". The anti-Iran articles also gave the impression that Iran had deliberately underreported the production of low enriched uranium at Natanz.
In response to questions by Dr. Kaveh Afrasiabi, the IAEA spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, has issued a statement clarifiying the IAEA's position regarding the misleading articles in the US and European press concerning Iran's production of low-enriched uranium. ››read more
››read more
